Opportunities
PhD and postdoc opportunities at the Grassl Group — Concrete Mechanics for Performance Based Design at the University of Glasgow.
We welcome motivated students interested in the mechanics of materials to join our research group.
Tip: The School's main funding round typically closes at the end of January. You'll usually need to have submitted a PhD application before then to be considered for funding.
How to apply
Please email first to discuss fit and potential topics, then submit a formal application through the University.
Steps
- Email peter.grassl@glasgow.ac.uk with a short introduction.
- Attach the materials listed under What to include (below).
- After feedback, submit the formal application: Online application →
What to include
- 1–2 page CV (with grades and ranking if available)
- Brief statement of research interests (≈300–500 words)
- Any publications, preprints, or code repositories (optional)
- Names/emails of two referees (optional at first contact)
Funding
If you do not already have funding, please see the School’s current calls: Funding opportunities →
Admission to the PhD programme is separate from funding. In many cases applicants are considered for funding after they have been accepted to the programme — so it’s best to contact me early and apply for admission in good time.
Topics & methods
- Meso/micro scale modelling of heterogeneous cementitious materials
- Damage–plasticity constitutive modelling (e.g., CDPM2 family)
- Fracture–transport coupling; corrosion-induced cracking
- Structural modelling under accidental loading
- Computational tools: OOFEM (and our GitHub fork)
